Perhaps we can create user profiles for those who are having issues... But, I agree that it's odd when anyone legit has real problems registering.

awesome find man!!! what are your plans??
It's not actually mine. A friend from Europe sent me these progress pictures. We have been finding and restoring lost or abandoned VW's for years. The plan is always to get them mechanically new, tight and back on the road. Then we attempt to keep the original weathered paint and repair the body utilizing metal with little or no bondo. New rubber seals and clean interior etc.

Holy shit!  That thing is bad, and in amazing shape for the condition in which it was found!
It's almost like it was preserved in the earth. I find old VW's in this condition all the time. Most people make the mistake of stripping them and "starting over". In the process the originality is lost and cheap parts are often used. I found the quality of a build is in the re-use of factory pieces.

this is so true

CLR works well for superficial surface rust. As a base clean-up it can be a good start. Applying a clear coat over the surface rust that's left after cleaning can "lock" it in and protect the sheet metal from rotting further. A lot of people use a linseed or teak oil to "rub" in for a semi-gloss shine.

Be careful with the term, "patina". I'm not trying to be a douche here... but the original idea of patina came from the natural wear and overall affect of time taking it's toll on factory paint. In all reality, it's an earned process. When manufactured to look like it has natural patina, it loses it's definition and uniqueness.

You have to be lucky enough to find patina. If you force it, you've lost the concept all together. Layering paint and then sanding it off can look great. It's a way of painting a car to make it look old and used. But if it's not natural, it's not technically patina.

how did u go about lowering the front? i have a 71 1 super also

Welcome to the forum! Depending on your wallet, you can go with drop coils or coilovers and dial-in the height you're looking for. If you flip the tie rods, you can get even lower without having to do any notching.

Here's a good thread about the topic: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3526270
